Corbitt named interim city manager

POSTED: December 22, 2011 4:33 p.m.

Rincon City Council members have named Wesley Corbitt as the interim city manager.

Corbitt has been the city’s finance director since August 2009, a part-time position. Rincon has been without a city manager since Mike Phillips resigned in August. Corbitt said he may look at becoming a candidate for the position.

“I’m seeing if it is something that is a good fit for all of us,” he said. “At this point, I enjoy working with the council. They are aggressive in their thinking.”

Mayor Ken Lee extolled Corbitt’s financial acumen following the executive session that ended Wednesday night’s special called meeting.

“Number one, his financial knowledge is critical to us,” Lee said. “It’s been so helpful to us in our finance and budget process. In addition to that, it’s just his people skills. This, like so many other things, is a people business.”

Corbitt, a certified public accountant, has been the auditor for Rincon, Guyton, Springfield, Sylvania and Screven County. He is also an associate pastor at Grace Community Church and recently completed a mission trip to Egypt.

“His ability to work through issues and resolve conflicts and his people skills are going to be critical,” Lee said. “With his demeanor, he has a way of approaching people that really calms things.”

Lee also said Corbitt’s time as interim city manager could determine if he could have the position full-time.

“It is totally different from what he has done for his career,” the mayor said. “But he is intrigued by the process. It’s testing the waters for he and us both. He’s anxious to try it and willing to try it.”

The city received 38 applications for its open city manager position.
