City to cut out a meeting a month

POSTED: February 16, 2012 6:49 p.m.

Springfield City Council members will be spending less time at City Hall.

Council members voted 5-0 Tuesday night to drop one of two monthly meetings, cutting out their fourth Tuesday of the month council meeting.

Council meetings now will be conducted on the second Tuesday of the month.

“The money we save going to one meeting is well worth the effort,” council member Charles Hinely said. “The money we save is going to be beneficial, and we’re not going to neglect our responsibilities.”

City Manager Brett Bennett estimated that by reducing the meetings from two to one each month, the city could save approximately $10,000 a year. He also noted that council meetings usually take less than an hour to conduct.

“If issues arise, meetings can be called,” said council member Steve Shealy.
