Veterans Park to hold Memorial Day ceremony

POSTED: May 21, 2012 8:20 p.m.

Effingham County residents are invited to participate in the annual Memorial Day program at Veterans Park in Springfield. The program will be held Monday at 6 p.m. and will honor all veterans. Specific honor will be paid to the 62 men from Effingham killed in action.

The program will present four families who will relate their circumstances when they received the message that their loved one had been killed in action.

The "We Remember" theme will demonstrate how different times were, going back to World War II, and what the communication links were. The program will ask the question "do you remember" regarding several events, going back to Pearl Harbor.

The Effingham Community Orchestra will provide music for the day; the ECHS Air Force JROTC will post the colors.

"We have few days that are marked specifically for the citizens to pay honor and tribute to our military men and women," said Ruth Lee, Veterans Park chairperson. "On this Memorial Day, it is an opportunity to remember the price paid for the freedom we cherish each day by those who make the ultimate sacrifice. Remember to thank the families of those who gave their life. We owe them a debt of gratitude."
