Driver tells ECSO he may have hit bicyclist

POSTED: December 13, 2012 8:41 p.m.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office has a potential lead in the hit-and-run that seriously injured a bicyclist Sunday night.

A man went to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and told deputies he may have been the person who drove into the bicyclist. Mitchell Johnson, 47, of Guyton was hit from behind while riding his bicycle south on Hodgeville Road near Forest Haven Road, according to ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Deputies and Georgia State Troopers went to the man’s home in Port Wentworth and towed his car as evidence, Ehsanipoor said.

The man’s name has not been released and formal charges have not been filed.

Johnson remains at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah with serious injuries, according to Ehsanipoor. The hit-and-run is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.

Anyone with any information or any possible witnesses are asked to contact the Georgia State Patrol or Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
