Second Parent University coming to ECMS on Saturday

POSTED: January 31, 2013 9:19 p.m.

Organizers are hoping for another strong crowd at the second Parent University.

Parent University will be held Saturday at Effingham County Middle School, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. Effingham’s Parent University is fashioned after Chatham County’s Parent University, according to Dr. Franklin Goldwire.

“We try to color outside the lines,” Goldwire said. “We have an aggressive agenda targeting our young people. We want to help them be more productive members of our community.”

The last Parent University also featured a session on new laws. There was a session on new drivers’ license laws and how those changes affected the community. The turnout “far exceeded the participation we saw in Chatham County,” Goldwire said.

Saturday’s session includes an update on the new common core Georgia performance standards, how to protect yourself on the Internet, CPR basics, safety in schools and programs and services at the Effingham College and Career Academy.

“One of the most popular sessions we had was on CPR from Effingham Hospital,” Goldwire said. “People were looking how to handle emergencies.”

The day starts at 7:45 a.m. with breakfast, and lunch also will be provided. There also will be door prizes and vendors.

All activities at Parent University-Effingham are free, and classes will be provided for children ages 4-17. Parent University is sponsored by several entities, including the Effingham County Board of Education and the Springfield Central High School Association.
