Outstanding artwork created by Effingham County public school students during the 2012-13 school year has been on display this week.

As part of Youth Art Month, the Effingham County School System is holding its second annual district-wide student art exhibition at Effingham College and Career Academy.

Artwork of all types of media is displayed from all of the county’s elementary, middle and high schools as well as the College and Career Academy. Each school’s art teachers decided which pieces to showcase.

More than 250 works of art are on display, but no awards are given. The exhibition is an appreciation of art, not a competition.

“The honor is in being chosen by your teacher,” said South Effingham High School art teacher Mary Cale Wilson. “I keep my eye out all year for outstanding students and outstanding pieces.”

The student art exhibition continues through Friday. It is free and open to the public from 7:45 a.m.-6 p.m. at ECCA.

“It shows that kids in Effingham County are interested in art, and that the arts are alive and well in our schools,” Wilson said. “We have a part in a child’s development.”
