Busy weekend ahead for the area

POSTED: April 11, 2013 8:36 p.m.

It will be a busy weekend in Effingham County, with one new event and one annual favorite providing plenty of activities.

The eighth annual celebration of local history and heritage, Old Effingham Day, is set for Saturday. The full day of family-friendly activities starts with a parade at 9:30 a.m. on Laurel Street.

Entertainers will perform all day, headlined by a concert by The Tams at 7 p.m. The “Effingham Idol” contest, a showcase of local singers, will be at 2 p.m.

Another favorite is the “tater hawg” contest at 4 p.m. The Historic Effingham Museum and Living History Site will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and demonstrations such as blacksmithing, quilting, syrup making, turpentine and moonshine making will go on throughout the day.

Also going on this weekend is the first Effingham Adventure Weekend, a four-day event that began Thursday night. Adventure Weekend is a partnership of more than 30 local churches, of several denominations, to bring the community together through positive events for all ages.

Highlighting Adventure weekend are two free events — an outdoor family expo Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and a celebration rally Sunday at 6 p.m. Both will be at the Effingham County High School football stadium.

The outdoor expo will include a variety of games, bounce houses, a climbing wall, car show, silent auction and vendor booths. Also, world-renowned hunting dog trainer Hank Hough of Kingdom Dog Ministries will teach valuable life lessons during a show with his AKC-registered Labrador retrievers.

At the celebration rally, musician Charles Billingsley will lead worship and Jay Lowder, founder of Jay Lowder Harvest Minsitries, will give a message of hope and faith.
