ECSO seeking robbery suspect

One man was arrested after a report of an armed robbery Tuesday night, and Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for another man, after a chase that included the suspects running their car off the road and into a pond.

Eyewitnesses reported the suspect was picked up by a white female driving a silver car on Hodgeville Road. The suspect appeared to be in his early 20s, wearing a white tank top, blue jeans and barefoot and goes by the street name of “Zulu.”  He was later identified as Antonial Maurice Kirkland, 18, of Guyton.

According to the ECSO, deputies were notified by the victim he was robbed on Hester Road by two men and was following the suspect vehicle.

At around 6:30 p.m., deputies made contact with the suspect vehicle and pursued the car on Blue Jay Road to Herbert Kessler Road.

The driver wrecked the vehicle into a small pond where two men got out of the car and fled on foot.

Deputies searched the area with assistance from a local K9 and quickly apprehended one suspect.

The second suspect was not found after an extensive search.

Deputies received information that the second suspect had been spotted on Hodgeville Road around noon Wednesday. A second search of the area with assistance from Garden City K9 handlers and Savannah Chatham Metro Air Unit concluded with no results.

Deputies arrested Leon Clemmons Jr., 19, of Garden City, who was charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
