ECSO warns against firing guns to celebrate New Year’s

POSTED: December 30, 2013 6:50 p.m.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is reminding all citizens to be responsible and not to fire a gun in a reckless manner, to ensure a safe New Year's Eve for all.

The projectile that goes into the air has to eventually come down.

In many cases the velocity will come down at a speed of more than 200 feet per second, which can penetrate the human skull.

There have been incidents in that past on New Year’s Eve in which an individual was struck in Effingham County. Celebration shooting can cause serious injury or death.

ECSO is urging the continued support of the community in stopping this kind of celebration. Deputies are asking people to persuade friends and loved ones to not endanger others by firing guns to ring in the new year.

In addition, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office will have increased patrol over the holiday weekend. The traffic enforcement team will be working aggressively targeting impaired drivers, according to ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.
