Six hurt in truck, daycare van wreck

POSTED: February 17, 2014 8:04 p.m.

Six people were injured, one of them seriously, when a pickup collided with a childcare business’ van Monday morning at Highway 21 and Ebenezer Road.

Two adults and three small children were inside the van belonging to R & R Group Daycare in Guyton, investigators said. The van flipped on its side after colliding with the Chevrolet pickup around 7:30 a.m.

The driver of the pickup was seriously injured and airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center, according to Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor. All five people in the van were taken to local hospitals with various injuries, none of which are believed to be life-threatening.

“It appears to be mostly cuts and bruises, and it appears everyone was properly buckled into the van,” Ehsanipoor said. “First responders and deputies helped the kids out of the van.”

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck. The names of the drivers had not been released at press time.

The pickup was traveling south on Highway 21 and the driver turned left toward Ebenezer Road. The truck crossed into the path of the northbound van, according to Ehsanipoor.

The van had the right of way and charges are pending, he said.
