A Savannah man who thought he was making contact with the mother of a child to set up a sexual encounter with the 5-year-old will avoid going to trial on the charge.

George Matthew Vickery pled guilty Tuesday to two counts in Effingham County Superior Court and will serve five years in prison and get 15 years of probation. Vickery was charged with three counts of computer pornography, one count of criminal attempt to commit child molestation and one count of enticing a child for indecent purposes.

He pled guilty to two counts of computer pornography and also has been banished from the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit.

Vickery initially made contact with the child’s mother on Facebook, where the two had mutual friends. But Vickery soon began making sexually-explicit comments about her daughter, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office investigators said, and he even provided details on the sexual acts he wanted to perform on the child.

The child’s mother got in touch with the ECSO, which then investigated Vickery for about two weeks. While he thought he was sending text messages to the mother, he was in reality messaging an undercover officer, and a September 2013 rendezvous was arranged at Rincon’s Jaycee Veterans Memorial Park. Instead of meeting the mother and her child, investigators were waiting on him and arrested him.

Vickery was indicted Dec. 2, 2013, and his charges included possession of tools during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm during commission of a crime. Vickery had a .40-caliber handgun when he was arrested.

Vickery will get credit for time served and faced a maximum sentence of 85 years.

Another man accused of child pornography has had his case put on the dead docket and is being classified as a fugitive. Soufi Mahmoud faces three counts of sexual exploitation of children for distributing six videos of kids engaged in sexually-explicit conduct. Mahmoud was arrested a year ago as part of a child porn sweep, which resulted in five arrests.
