Annual Sunday school convention coming

POSTED: April 24, 2014 5:58 p.m.

The 135th annual convention of the Sunday School Association of Effingham County will be held May 4 at 10 a.m. with participating Sunday schools ready to march under the tabernacle at 9:45 a.m. The convention will be held again at the historic Effingham County Methodist Campground.

The Rev. P.H. Crumpler, a Methodist, is more or less given credit for forming the Effingham County Sunday School Association. It is said that at the close of Methodist Camp Meeting, he expressed a desire to invite other churches and Sunday schools to join together for a meeting.

The first Sunday School Association of Effingham County was held on Wednesday, May 28, 1879 at the Methodist Campground in Springfield. Of the 25 Sunday schools in the county, 15 were represented.

With this being the Methodists’ year to host the convention, President Whit Myers of Mizpah United Methodist Church has secured David Seyle, president of Andrew College, to be the guest speaker.

Seyle received his master of divinity and doctor of ministry from the Candler School of Theology. He is also a recipient of a Rollins Research Fellowship at Emory and a graduate of the Harvard University Institute for Management and Leadership in Eduction.

He was named pastor of Cuthbert United Methodist Church and Andrew College chaplain in 1991 and became academic dean and professor of religion and philosophy in 1995. Seyle was named interim president in 2006 and became the permanent president Aug. 8, 2007.

Attendees may want to bring a basket dinner to share as several churches get together every year for dinner on the grounds.

For anyone whose Sunday school is interested in participating, contact Stuart Exley at 754-3402.
