Authorities investigating two fires

POSTED: April 24, 2014 10:01 p.m.

Investigators are looking into fires at two vacant homes in Effingham County, including one they are calling suspicious.

A home on Hodgeville Road was “fully engulfed” when fire crews and sheriff’s deputies responded to it around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

The fire was deemed suspicious during the initial investigation. The state fire marshal’s office was contacted and spent Thursday investigating the scene.

“We do have reason to believe it could possibly be arson,” Ehsanipoor said.

Another fire, just before 2 a.m. Thursday, destroyed a mobile home on Highway 119 in Clyo, just south of the South Carolina state line.

Ehsanipoor described the home as a “total loss.”

No one was injured in either fire. No one lived at the home on Hodgeville Road, and the mobile home had been vacated.

“There were occupants who recently lived there. According to neighbors, they moved out recently,” Ehsanipoor said.

Investigators have not at this time called the Clyo fire suspicious, but it is being investigated, according to Ehsanipoor.

Anyone with information about either fire is asked to contact the ECSO at 754-3449.
