Effingham 4-H’ers participated in the Southeast District Junior Conference at the Burton 4-H Center on Tybee Island.

The 4-H’ers made “happy bags” for children being treated at Children’s Hospital at Memorial Health University Medical Center. The 4-H’ers decorated bags and filled them with coloring books, crayons, puzzles and games. The service project was part of Global Youth Service Day sponsored by Hands On Savannah.

Speakers included former Georgia Southern standout and pro football player Adrian Peterson, who emphasized “hard work pays off,” and Georgia State 4-H President Oakley Perry, who encouraged 4-H’ers to not let obstacles get in the path of the road to success.

Instructors from the J.W. Fanning Institute taught interactive workshops on goal setting, leadership and time management. The District 4-H Junior Conference is an annual event for seventh- and eighth-grade 4-H’ers.

For more information on the 4-H program, contact Effingham County Extension agent Abby Smith at 754-8040.
