Danica Pearson’s quick thinking paid off with the grand prize at the Exchange Club’s Georgia District Convention on St. Simons Island.

The Ebenezer Elementary School student took first place in the club’s Quick-Think-A-Thon district competition earlier this month.

Pearson, a rising third-grader at EES, advanced to the district competition by winning the Effingham County Exchange Club’s 14th annual Quick-Think-A-Thon in April.

“We are all so proud of Danica,” said Yvette Carr, president-elect of the Effingham Exchange Club.

Quick-Think-A-Thon is a competition open to all second-graders, to help children make smart, quick decisions about personal safety.

Each student is asked three questions on how to respond in different situations, such as child abuse, abductions, peer pressure, fire and medical emergencies, and approaches by strangers in-person or online. Students have to give quick answers, and a panel of judges decides whose are best.

For Pearson winning the local competition, she received a new bicycle and helmet from the Exchange Club and Ebenezer’s second-graders were treated to a pizza party.

Child abuse prevention is one of the key initiatives of the Effingham County Exchange Club.
