The state Department of Public Safety reported there were 11 fatalities on Georgia’s roads during the 4th of July holiday weekend, which ran from July 3 at 6 p.m. to July 6 at midnight.

Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated accidents leading to four fatalities, and local agencies are handling wrecks that claimed seven lives.

There were five fatalities on Georgia’s streets and highways during the July 4 holiday in 2013, which was 102 hours long. The 2014 holiday was 78 hours long.

During last year’s July 4th holiday period, the GSP investigated 1,150 traffic crashes that resulted in 564 injuries, issued 9,849 citations, 18,477 warnings, and made 359 DUI arrests.

The highest number of July Fourth holiday fatalities was in 1972 when 34 people were killed. The lowest was two deaths in 1962, 1984, and 2012.
