County to set 2015 millage rate Wednesday

POSTED: August 11, 2014 8:10 p.m.

Effingham County commissioners are expected to set the 2014-15 millage rates when they meet Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Commissioners have a proposed millage rate of 8.422 for the unincorporated portion of the county, and a total millage rate of 29.107. The total rate includes the millages assessed for the hospital authority and the industrial development authority, and the board of education’s millage.

The school board has adopted a millage rate of 16.608 for the coming fiscal year, and the state millage rate, once up to .25, will be .1.

The county is projecting to collect $14.79 million in property taxes for the 2015 fiscal year.

The county’s millage rate was as high as 10.127 years ago. It was at 8.558 for FY13 and FY14. Effingham’s real property digest grew $1.2 million to $1.42 billion.

Commissioners also are expected to set the fire and sanitation fees for the unincorporated portions of the county. Fire fees last year were set at $80 for residences and $250 for commercial properties. Industrial fire fees were set at $250 a year for 25 or fewer employees and $2,000 a year for firms with at least 26 employees. It is proposed to keep the fire fees the same for the coming fiscal year.

Last year’s sanitation fee was $200, and county staff is proposing to keep it at that level.

Commissioners approved a $26.81 million budget less than two months ago.
