Barrow to host rebate, tax filing workshop

POSTED: April 26, 2008 5:00 a.m.

On Monday, U.S. Rep John Barrow (D-Savannah) will host a workshop to help folks in the area fill out the forms they need to submit in order to receive their tax rebate checks, and to provide some last minute tax advice. The workshop will run from 6-7:30 p.m., and will be held at the Savannah Morning News Auditorium, located at 1375 Chatham Parkway, between I-16 and Ogeechee Road.

Everyone is encouraged to stop by at any time from 6-7:30 p.m. to meet with representatives from agencies and organizations such as the IRS and AARP, who will have the forms that folks will have to file in order to get their rebates, even if they don’t ordinarily file a return.

Under the bipartisan economic stimulus plan that passed earlier this year, four million families in Georgia are eligible for rebates of up to $600 per individual and $1,200 per married couple. Most taxpayers who file an income tax return with the IRS will automatically receive their stimulus payments.

However, there are thousands of Georgians who don’t file a federal income tax return because they aren’t required to file, who are still entitled to a rebate, such as seniors whose only income is Social Security. They must file a return in order to get their rebate.

The IRS says that everyone who is entitled to receive a stimulus payment must file a 2007 tax return.

“A lot of folks in my district, especially those receiving Social Security, may not be used to filing a federal tax return,” Barrow said. “I want to make sure they don’t get left out of this economic stimulus plan.

“This stimulus plan is designed to help the economy, but I also want to make sure that it helps as many of the citizens I represent as possible. I also want to help anyone else out who needs some last minute help with their taxes.”
