SPRINGFIELD -- Effingham County had a rough day at the football office on Friday.

The Rebels surrendered 14 points in a 59-second spurt early the second quarter and couldn't come back against Glynn Academy in their opening Region 2-AAAAAA game. They lost 48-27 after trailing by as many as 30 points in the second half.

"Everybody that we watched film on this year -- when you make mistakes against them -- they capitalize on them," Rebels coach Buddy Holder said. "They are a well-coached team."

The Red Terrors (3-2, 1-0) got one of their early scores on an interception return right after Caine Crews scored on a two-yard run to cap an 11-play, 89-yard drive.

"We gave them one (touchdown) offensively," Holder said. "Defensively, we played pretty good in the first half. They did some things to us in the second half that took advantage of some key mistakes we made and the next thing you know we are chasing our tail a little bit.

"You can't do that against good teams."

One bright spot for the Rebels was the return of running back Toot Johnson, who has been out with an injury. He rushed for 172 yards on 16 carries, including a 69-yard touchdown romp early in the third quarter.

"He ran really hard and I was glad to see it," Holder said. "He looked really good."

Effingham County (3-4, 0-1) will have next week off before visiting Brunswick on Oct. 20.

"(The bye week) couldn't  have come at a better time," Holder said. "We've got to heal up. It gives us a chance to do that and fix a few mistakes -- and prepare for Brunswick -- but we can do it a little slower because we have the week off."
