GUYTON -- South Effingham withdrew some helpful knowledge from its memory bank that helped it obtain another championship.

The Mustangs won the Region 2-AAAAA vollyeball title Saturday afternoon by downing Statesboro in five sets. They rallied from an 8-5 deficit to win the decisive set 15-13.

"We got it done this time," South Effingham coach Chancey Garrett said. "I'm so excited and so proud of them."

South Effingham played a rugged non-region slate that included powerful Calvary Day and other Savannah-area schools. It finished the season with an 8-15 overall record, losing several matches it led at one point or another, including a heartbreaking five-setter against rival Effingham County.

The lessons learned in those hard battles came to the forefront against Statesboro and other region foes. They Mustangs won seven of eight regular-season matches against 2-AAAAA opponents.

"My favorite thing about coaching is watching it all come together like that, watching them fight for it," Garrett said. ""It's an amazing thing to watch."

The Mustangs surged after Garrett called timeout in the final set with the Blue Devils in front 8-5. With seniors Emma Williams, Tessa Cormack and Madison Cocke on the floor, they won seven of the next 10 points before Statesboro forced a 12-12 tie.

"The girls really stuck with it this game," Garrett said. "They wanted it and I think it showed in the way they played. When they got down, they got right back up."

The game was knotted again 13-13, but South Effingham won the last two points, setting off a celebration of their second straight region crown and fourth since 2012.
