GUYTON -- Every South Effingham Elementary School student shined in a big way Thursday.

The Mini Mustangs sported glow-in-the-dark necklaces and/or wristbands while participating in the school's third annual Fun Run, a PTO fundraiser, in their school's dark gym. The event, featuring an encouraging emcee and lively music, had generated $21,009 as of 8:22 a.m. The goal was $20,000.

"We raised almost $20,000 in our first year and it has just gotten bigger and bigger," South Effingham PTO President Hollie Gatewood said. "It is the biggest fundaiser the school has ever had. We have had so much success.

"The school also benefits because we split the money. We have actually brought in about $38,000 worth of funds."

Most of the students received pledges of financial support for their participation. Some were paid per lap. Others received a flat fee.

"Everybody runs whether they receive a pledge or not," Gatewood said. "We don't want anybody to feel left out."

Each grade ran during its specials period. The school record for laps is 54, set by a fifth-grade boy last year.

The PTO will again use the Fun Run money to buy Chromebooks.

"We have a ratio of Chromebooks of almost one-to-one from second grade through fifth grade and no other school ini the county has that," Gatewood said. "We've been able to do that because of the Fun Run."

The PTO also intends to buy a poster maker. It will allow teachers to laminate materials that can be used year after year.

"We are also looking a doing a new LED marquee sign out front," Gatewood said.
