SPRINGFIELD — Even though Effingham County’s girls basketball team is in a season of rebuilding, head coach Katy Fleming is looking forward to the process. She is eager to see how her young core grows and matures over the next couple of years.
“We should be quick and scrappy,” Fleming said. “They like to play team ball and I hope the young talent will develop.”
Despite their 10-16 record from a year ago, Fleming believes her squad , off to an 0-3 start heading into Tuesday’s home game against New Hampstead, has a handful of athletes that can challenge teams in and out of Region 2-AAAAAA play.
“Shermarah Hicklen is our point guard,” Fleming said. “She should have a good season because she is such a great player with an awesome attitude. She will lead the team with her quickness, defense and her driving ability.”
Fleming is hopeful the Lady Rebels can be the surprise team in the region tournament and beyond.
“The last two seasons we have been knocked out of the region tournament, but I think this team has the ability to work together and make it to the state playoffs,” she said.
