Brandt taking college plunge

POSTED: February 13, 2018 7:57 a.m.

GUYTON — After an outstanding career in the Savannah Coastal Swim League, Megan Brandt, 18, is about to jump into much bigger pool.

On Feb. 8, the homeschooled student from Guyton signed with Hanover College, a NCAA Division III school in southern Indiana.

Brandt, a member of the Georgia Coastal Aquatic Team (GCAT), has been swimming competitively for only four years.

“It isn’t that long, actually, compared to everyone else I train with,” Brandt said. “I wouldn’t say I’m a natural. It’s a lot of hard work.”

Brandt, whose specialty is the backstroke, is ready to help Hanover College any way she can. It is reviving its swim program this fall after 40 years of dormancy.

“I’m mainly there the 100 back and 200 back but I’m probably going to be swimming a lot of other events, too,” she said.

It was only last year that Brandt started to believe that she might be able to land a college opportunity via swimming.

“It came about that I could — if I tried,” she said.

In order to gain notice, Brandt started posting her GCAT times on a website colleges use for recruiting purposes. It didn’t take long for Hanover College to reach out to her and initiate the recruiting process.

“It was exciting when I was first contacted,” Brandt said. “They emailed me but they also called me.”

Brandt plays to major in nutrition and exercise science. She is set to report to Hanover College on Aug. 25.
