GUYTON — Siblings Darius and Isaiah Scott need help to achieve their goal of helping others.
The South Effingham High School students, under the guidance of their campaign-managing mother, Sonja, are raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They are competing against other youths in Effingham and Chatham counties for the title of Student of the Year, which goes to the one who collects the most money for the organization.
The seven-week contest will conclude March 23.
“It’s a competition but it’s really about raising money for research,” Darius said.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission is to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
“I thank last year the winner raised about $15,000 and we are shooting for that,” Darius said.
The competition is teaching the Scotts skills in the areas of networking, communication, entrepreneurship and leadership.
“It is fun working with my brother and my mom,” Isaiah said. “I have learned so much about how fundraising works.”
The Scotts generated money when their school agreed to let students wear jeans if they made a donation.
The Scotts also sent fund-raising letters to area individuals and businesses. Car washes, bake sales and yard sales are also in the works.
“We had a brother who had congenital heart disease so our family knows what it’s like to deal with life-threatening issues and we felt like it was our responsibility to be a part of this,” Darius said.
