RINCON — After inching its way here for 65 years, Marshland Credit Union has arrived.
Known as Glynn Teachers Federal Credit Union when it organized in 1953, Marshland Credit Union broke the ribbon on a Rincon branch May 30. The facility located at 135 Goshen Road, Suite 135 extends the credit union’s reach.
“Our field is Effingham County, Bryan County, McIntosh County, Glynn County, Brantley County and Wayne County,” said Rincon branch manager Stephen Bell.
Bell, who has four decades of experience in banking, conversed with guests after the ribbon cutting. The event included an impressive food spread prepared by The Loft Cafe and numerous giveaways, including drawings for a $500 CD.
“We want to be highly visible here,” Bell said.
Glynn Teachers Federal Credit Union organized to serve educators of the Glynn County School System and their families. Its first office was in the Wolfe Street Building on the Glynn Academy Campus.
In 1975, Glynn Teachers Federal Credit Union got its first freestanding office. It was around this time that its customer base expanded to include Brunswick Junior College, the McIntosh Board of Education, the Brantley County Board of Education, the City of Brunswick, the Glynn County Board of Education and other government-related organizations.
Bell has been in the banking business for nearly four decades.
In the 1990s, the credit union set up branches in Nahunta and Darien, and it added one in St. Simons in 2000.
In 2006, Glynn Teachers Federal Credit Union changed its name to Marshland Credit Union to properly reflect its rapidly growing membership.
Marshland Credit Union is a not-for-profit organization, meaning it profits are returned to its member in the form of lower rates on loans, higher dividends on savings and a long list of convenient services.
The Rincon branch is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, it is open from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
