The Georgia Jr. National Livestock Show was Feb. 18-21 in Perry.

Students show heifers or spring pigs in two different categories - in showmanship, which is judged on how well the students handle their animals in the show ring.

The heifers show in either beef commercial or registered breed classes.

The hogs show in either commercial, barrow or breeding gilt classes.

Showmanship was on Feb. 19 — Lauren Shuman placed 10 overall in senior showmanship.

Barrows showed on Feb. 20 — Jason Piche (Effingham County Middle School) placed fourth in his class.

Gilts showed on Saturday — Shuman placed second in her class.

Heifers showed on Feb. 19 (showmanship) and Feb. 20 market and registered classes. Orry Smith placed third in his class, Katie Herndon placed third in her class and Cheyanne Mock placed third in her class for showmanship.

For market classes, Smith placed 10th and Mock placed ninth in their classes.

For registered breeds, Herndon placed sixth with her black angus.

Those who showed were Lauren Shuman, Chris Tuten, Heather Smith (11th grade), Cheyanne Mock (10th), Orry Smith (ninth), Brantley Burns, Katie Herndon and Jason Piche (eighth ECMS).

The hog showmen had a chance to get in some practice at the FFA Alumni Hog Show on Feb. 17 at the fairgrounds.

Hogs from ECHS, ECMS, South Effingham High School, South Effingham Middle School and some 4-Hers from Sand Hill competed.

The ECHS alumni would like to express thanks to those business that donated money or prizes for the Alumni Show.
