Two people are dead after leading law enforcement authorities on a chase that ended early Sunday morning on Highway 21 in Rincon.

The pursuit, which reached speeds over 90 mph, according to reports, apparently began on Interstate 16 in Chatham County. Georgia State Patrol troopers, in pursuit of a Kia, called for assistance from Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies. A deputy placed a spike strip across Highway 21 northbound before its intersection with 4th Street.

The suspects’ car drove toward the deputy to avoid the spike strips, according to authorities, and collided with a sports utility vehicle, a Ford Edge, after hitting the spike strips. The suspects’ car had collided with three other vehicles during the pursuit.

The driver of the Kia has been identified as Dartanya Bentley, 22, of Savannah. The passenger was identified as Travis Floyd, 19, of Savannah. Their bodies were taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s state crime lab in Savannah for autopsies.

Georgia State Patrol’s specialized collision reconstruction team out of Tattnall County has been called in.
