Signups for CRP to begin next month

ATHENS-Hobby Stripling, Executive Director of USDA's Farm Service Agency in Georgia announced a general signup for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) will begin on March 14 and continue through April 15. During the signup period, farmers and ranchers may offer eligible land for CRP's competitive general signup at their county Farm Service Agency (FSA) office.

USDA makes microloans available in Effingham

Donnie Thomas, acting state director of USDA Rural Development, presented a ceremonial big check to members of the Small Business Assistance Corporation (SBAC) for the Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance Program (RMAP). Through RMAP, SBAC will provide micro-loans - loans less than $50,000 - to small rural businesses. SBAC is receiving a $400,000 loan and a $100,000 grant. The event was held at Southeast Technical College in Vidalia.

E. coli leads to ground beef recall

A ground beef recall for possible E. coli contamination was issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service on Aug. 12.
