Container traffic booming at Georgia Ports Authority

SAVANNAH-Georgia Ports Authority's (GPA) Executive Director Curtis J. Foltz announced Monday that the GPA experienced 25.3-percent container growth in May and has recorded six consecutive months of double-digit growth.
"May was the sixth busiest month ever recorded for container throughput and continued the string of double-digit growth experienced since last December," Foltz said. "The growth experienced in the second half of this fiscal year continues to signal improved economic recovery, retail inventory re-stocking and ongoing strength in U.S. products overseas with significant export increases."

Unemployment rises slightly in metro Savannah

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor reported that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Savannah rose to 8.3 percent in May, up one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 8.2 percent in April. Meanwhile, the number of unemployed workers in the metro area increased to 14,659, up 179 from 14,480 in April.

Georgia Power donates $10K for fish research

The Georgia Power Foundation, Inc. recently made its fifth contribution to support the Marine Sportfish Carcass Recovery Project with a $10,000 donation to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. This latest donation makes a total of $55,000 provided to support the project.

DOL to hold workshop for laid-off educators

ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Labor will continue a series of workshops Saturday to help laid-off employees of educational institutions transition into new careers.
The workshops, which will last approximately two hours, will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the following location: Savannah Hyatt Regency, 2 West Bay St., Savannah, in the Vernon Room.
Please note that the workshops are not job fairs, but workshops designed for the education employees being laid off throughout the state.

Effingham County Superintendent of Schools Rand Shearouse took the gavel from outgoing president Alice DeForest, beginning his tenure as president of the Effingham Chamber of Commerce at the Chamber's annual meeting Thursday night.
