IRS has refunds for those who didn’t file 2005 return

ATLANTA - Unclaimed refunds totaling approximately $1.3 billion are awaiting over a million people who failed to file a federal income tax return for 2005. In Georgia nearly $39 million in unclaimed refunds awaits about 44,000 individuals. However, to collect the money, a return for 2005 must be filed with an IRS office no later than April 15.

Jobless Georgians to get a little extra

ATLANTA - State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said that the Georgia Department of Labor has begun mailing an additional $25 per week to more than 180,000 jobless Georgians who have a valid unemployment insurance claim with the Georgia Department of Labor.

Another new high for unemployment

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor reported that the unemployment rate in the metro Savannah area rose to a preliminary unadjusted rate of 7.5 percent in January, up 2.9 percentage points over the year from January 2008. The jobless rate in metro Savannah rose nine-tenths of a percentage point from a revised 6.6 percent in December.

State’s unemployment rate hits new high mark

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor reported that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to a record-high preliminary 8.6 percent in January. This is the highest seasonally adjusted rate recorded in Georgia since 1976, when the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) standardized unemployment rates among all states.
