Exchange Club starts Empty Stocking campaign

The Exchange Club of Effingham County is beginning its annual Empty Stocking Fund drive.
"Now is the time for all good citizens to come together and help fill the empty stockings in Effingham County," said Reggie Loper, the chairman of the annual Effingham Empty Stocking Fund.
He said the current economic times are making it difficult for many families to put food on the table much less have the money to buy the family Christmas gifts."

At the art of the matter

With each painstaking application to the canvas, DAB is turning his view of a majestic treasure into a work of art.
The Charleston, S.C.-based artist - he goes by DAB - is creating a painting that isn't simply oil on canvas or a watercolor. DAB paints in a relief style, with the features of the building and the grounds of the historic Effingham Courthouse actually protruding from the surface.
And he's been working on this for a long time - he started back in 2007.

HES making plans for its Olde Fashioned Christmas celebration

The Historic Effingham Society is planning an old-fashioned Christmas for the first Saturday in December.
The event, Old-Fashioned Christmas, will be held on the grounds of the Living History Site in Springfield on Dec. 4 beginning at 6 p.m. It will include caroling, choir performances, ornament making, the lighting of the Christmas tree, s'mores making and a visit from Santa Claus.

City awards winners in Scarecrow contest

Three grand champions were crowned in the city of Rincon's 2010 Scarecrow Show-off.
The grand champion in community spirit went to 21 Auto Repair and the grand champion in residential went to Charlie Curtis of West 6th Street. The Effingham Herald's Scare D. Crow was crowned grand champion in the business category.

Moving Wall at Rotary

Retired Sgt. Maj. Tony Supthin from the West Chatham Detachment of the Marine Corps League spoke to the Rotary Club of Effingham County about their sponsorship of the "Vietnam Moving Wall" in Pooler from Oct. 28-Nov. 1.

State troopers starting Toys for Tots drive

ATLANTA-With the holiday season rapidly approaching, Col. Bill Hitchens, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, announced that the Department will again be collecting toys for the Toys for Tots Program.

Effingham CAP to start model rocketry

Each Tuesday, the cadets of the Effingham Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol meet to learn about aviation, aerospace engineering, search and rescue, and leadership.
The local squadron meets from 6-8 p.m. at 226 Goshen Rd. in building 500, room 507.
The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a volunteer, civilian auxiliary arm of the U.S. Air Force.
The cadet squadron is open to those ages 12 to 21. Membership is $30 annually, for adult members it is $69 annually.

Infant, mother improving after being struck

A teenage mother and her infant daughter are recovering after being struck by a vehicle Saturday evening.
The accident occurred Saturday around 7:30 p.m., according to Rincon Police Chief Mike Bohannon. The mother, 16 years old, had her 10-month-old baby in a stroller as they attempted to cross West 9th Street near Anderson Street. The area is unlit, Bohannon said.
A 68-year-old driver in a Mercedes struck the mother and child.

Work on historic Effingham Courthouse almost complete

Contractors working on the rehabilitation of the historic Effingham Courthouse are working on a punch list of touch up items as they have hit the mark for substantial completion.
County project manager Adam Kobek said Hussey, Gay, Bell and DeYoung and Greenline Architecture representatives have completed their walk-throughs on the courthouse. The project will be completed by Nov. 4, he said. The team of J.T. Local advocates attend statewide Arc conference

Two local advocates attended the Arc of Georgia annual conference and business meeting on Sept. 24 and 25 at the Anderson Conference Center in Macon.
