Former Guardsmen gather once more

On Dec. 6, retired former members of the old Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 214th Field Artillery, a Georgia Army National Guard Unit from Springfield, had a reunion at Rahn's Pond. The old unit became Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 214th Field Artillery in the reorganization in the summer of 1968. This unit remained as the same artillery unit until its deactivation in August 1993 (a total of 25 years of continued service).

Shearouse: system is 'on track'

Effingham County School System Superintendent Randy Shearouse spoke to the Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club and gave a positive update on the current state of the school system. Shearouse told the group that they are "on track" with all initiatives such as new schools and better test scores while remaining within budget.

Crawley discusses roads and revenues

Higher than projected SPLOST revenue has boosted efforts in transportation, recreational facilities and renovation of the old courthouse, among other projects. Whitehead addresses Rotary

Gail Whitehead, Effingham County elections supervisor, told the Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club about the many and varied duties of the Election Commission. Detailed work assures that every eligible vote counts during elections, but there is year-round work to register and maintain voter records. A recent budget cut will delay plans to provide additional early voting locations in the county.

Camp Buddy to start Monday at Rincon Elementary

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society announces the annual Camp Buddy summer camps in Effingham County and Chatham County will be held during the months of June and July. These educational and therapeutic camps are designed to help children with Down syndrome, ages 3-13, retain information they learned during the previous school year.
