Brown honored
Effingham Sunrise Rotary Secretary Ed Brown was recognized for being a four-time Paul Harris Fellow for financial contributions to the Rotary Foundation International. District Governor Kenan Kern made a special trip to meet with the Effingham Sunrise Rotary group and to personally present Brown with this prestigious award.

Harris chosen as finalist for Georgia’s 2009 Homecoming Queen
Jenny Harris, daughter of Chris and Teresa Harris of Rincon, has been selected as a finalist for Georgia's 29th annual homecoming queen selection to be held March 28-29 at the Holiday Inn Select Atlanta Airport South. Harris is the reigning homecoming queen for South Effingham High School.
Care center residents get a show
The residents at Effingham Care Center were entertained Saturday by the Lotus Dance Company, which performed a variety of Middle Eastern and fusion dances. The residents enjoyed the colorful costumes, veils and the canes they used during the performance.
The kindest cut
Studio 21 raised $700 for Treutlen House by holding a cut-a-thon March 7.
Ready for a pajama party
Victoria TenBroeck shared her enthusiasm for the services the American Cancer Society offers local residents with the Rotary Club of Effingham County. TenBroeck is particularly excited about this year's Relay for Life and is counting on it to be "the world's largest pajama party." Effingham Academy reunion
The Effingham Academy class of 1956 held its 53rd reunion at Johnny Harris Restaurant. The evening began with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and there were door prizes of chocolate candies and red silk roses for the ladies. A happy birthday was wished to Jimmy Derrick and a special welcome was given to Sally Graham Cavannah, attending her first reunion.
Rincon Garden Club installs officers
The Rincon Garden Club's 2009-10 season began with the installation of officers. The meeting was held in the home of Jim Scott. A white elephant sale was held to raise funds for their treasury. The club's objective is to beautify Rincon as seen by the plants and flowers in front of City Hall, the library, Manna House and the Hinely building. The Christmas tree given to the city by the Lion's Club was decorated by the Rincon Garden Club.

Air Force Airman Melanie J. Anderson has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
Forcing out hunger
Archie Jenkins, program coordinator for the Food OutReach Co-op of Effingham (FORCE), provided Effingham Sunrise Rotarians with statistics on hunger in the community. The number of students that are eligible for free or reduced lunches in the Effingham school system stands at 36.9 percent, or 4,081 students. Here he is greeted by Sunrise Rotary president Bonnie Dixon.

BB&T’s annual Lighthouse Project serves homeless, displaced students

Tips to follow to keep food safe when the power goes out
Many Effingham County residents are still without power following Sunday night's round of storms. The Effingham County Health Department wants to remind residents that while the power is out, refrigerator and freezer doors should remain closed as much as possible to keep food cold longer.
