Gourd retreat-southern style
The Gourd Retreat-Southern Style was held at Ebenezer Retreat Center on March 26-29. The retreat sponsored an auction to benefit the Low Country Down Syndrome Society at its Saturday night banquet. Gourd artists from all over the country came together at the retreat sponsored by Charlotte Durrence to take classes with other gourd friends. Churches support Manna House
Bethesda United Methodist Church recently made a donation of $1,200 to Manna House Ministries. First Baptist Church of Rincon also sent a special offering of $1,057 for the ministry. Rincon United Methodist, Faith Presbyterian, St. Luke's Episcopal, Bethel Lutheran, Mizpah United Methodist, and Faith Baptist Church contributed more than 500 pounds of food during the March.
Rincon update for Rotary
Rincon Mayor Ken Lee introduced Rincon's new city manager, Mike Phillips, and the city's new chief of police, Mike Bohannon, to members of the Rotary Club of Effingham County.
Going green
Effingham Rotary Sunrise President Bonnie Dixon presents Daniel Westcot of the Georgia Forestry Commission with a commemorative pen. Westcot presented the club with the latest information on benefits of having green spaces, planted forests and ecological balance.
Rooker finishes basic training
Air National Guard Airman Heather N. Rooker graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
Easter at Care Center
The residents at Effingham Care Center made Easter bonnets on April 8. The bonnets were made out of paper plates, multi-colored flowers and lace. The residents had a great time using their creativity to make these one of a kind bonnets.
Food Lion roars for Manna House
Manna House Ministries Director Lisa Bush, Food Lion Manager James Curry and Sonya Singletary show off the shopping carts of food donated to Manna House.
Mr. and Mrs. Effingham Care Center crowned
John Chancey and Eveline Reiser were crowned Mr. and Mrs. Care Center for 2009. This year's pageant theme was "In the Garden" and there were 35 women and nine men competing for the title. A special thanks goes to Kaye Pitts, Rose Marie Tebeau and Evelyn Davis for serving as judges.
Brown graduates from Leadership Southeast Georgia
Jacqueline Brown represented Effingham County in the 8th annual Leadership Southeast Georgia program. Brown was awarded her diploma at the graduation ceremony held March 14 at the Nessmith-Lane Building at Georgia Southern University.
Hobson completes basic training
Navy Seaman Recruit Brian C. Hobson, son of Eddie and Roxanne Moon of Guyton, and Brian W. Hobson of Deridder, La., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Olympic test
Laura Hahn of the United States Anti-Doping Agency spoke to the Rotary Club of Effingham County at their regular weekly meeting. USADA is responsible for the testing of all the Olympic athletes, in and out of competition. Sunrise Rotary welcomes YMCA
Effingham Sunrise Rotary President Bonnie Dixon presents a donation to Effingham YMCA Director Kim Dennis and YMCA board chairman Pete Lancaster. The two thanked the Sunrise Rotary for their continued support over the years and shared plans to grow for the future.
Care center gets a magic show
The residents at Effingham Care facility were mesmerized by the tricks Mr. Magic performed for them on March 24. The residents enjoyed the handkerchiefs, the bird and the Chinese rings that were used during the show. Many of the residents are still wondering "How did he do that?"

MedBank makes house call
Liz Longshore, executive director of MedBank, recently spoke to the Rotary Club of Effingham County. MedBank helps eligible patients access the Patience Assistance Programs of large pharmaceutical companies to obtain free medications. Through their staff and volunteers, MedBank provides assistance with applications and they work with referrals from physicians, hospitals and social service agencies. MedBank operates on- site services at several area clinics, including one in Effingham County.

Hospital to open its new doors for open house
The 58,000-square-foot, $30 million dollar expansion and modernization project of Effingham Hospital and Care Center is nearly complete, and on Jan. 28 the community is invited to attend a special ceremony, open house and behind-the-scenes tour of the new Effingham Health System.
Health Department, GSP to offer booster seat event
The Effingham County Health Department and Georgia State Patrol will hold a Give Kids a Boost community event Jan. 18 from 3-5 p.m. in the parking lot of Lowe's in Rincon. Booster seats will be given, at no cost, to income-eligible participants including those enrolled in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, PeachCare, or Medicaid, who can provide proof of eligibility.

Stroke, osteoporosis screenings coming to Rincon
Residents living in and around the Rincon community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. Faith Presbyterian Church will host Life Line Screening on Jan. 18. The site is located at 2000 Lexington Ave. in Rincon.
Colon health the focus of next Girls Night Out
Colon health is not often a subject of discussion among women having a night out. But perhaps the subject should come up more often, since according to the National Institute of Health, there were over 100,000 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in 2011.
