On June 14, members of Cub Scout Pack 691 helped Effingham Backpack Buddies prepare food packs for distribution. Bear Cubs Nathan Hall and Marshall Geddings, and Webelos Joshua Edwards assisted seven other volunteers in packing food for 40 families over a two-hour period of time. Effingham Backpack Buddies' objective is to provide food to hungry children via "backpacks" (food packs) to take home each weekend.

In June, Girl Scouts from Troop 30197 of Guyton earned their Coastal Georgia badge while also making friends. The girls met up with three other Girl Scout troops from West Virginia and Ohio and visited the Tybee Island Marine Science Center to learn about the Georgia Coast to earn their badge.

It was 1999 when Toby Tyler and Pete Lancaster reached out to Ann Purcell to pitch the idea of a YMCA branch in Effingham County. Thursday morning, in front of that branch, they helped cut the ribbon for Ann Purcell Connector, linking Pete Lancaster Lane and Toby Tyler Way.

The Mars Theatre along with Coast Pet Rescue will hold a pet adoption event on July 9 from 10 a.m.-noon at the theatre. Adoption fees are $150 for dogs and puppies and $40 for cats and kittens. The fee includes current shots, microchip, deworming, heartworm test (adult dogs), Felv/FIV test (felines), and spay/neuter.
