Rincon students complete Darton nursing

ALBANY-The following students from the Rincon area graduated this fall from the Darton College Nursing Program with Associate of Science degrees: Amy Chaplin, Amanda Buckholts, Kelly Hyman, and Dana Shores. They were recognized during the traditional Nursing Pinning Ceremony and are now eligible to take the licensing examination to become registered nurses.

SHRM to address how to handle workplace violence

Sgt. Ed Myrick of the Effingham County Sheriff's Office will be the guest speaker on "Preserving Human Capital: The Tactical Guide to Workplace Violence and Minimizing Loss of Life," presented by the Savannah Area Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management.
The presentation will be held Jan. 20 at 7:30 a.m. at the First City Club, 32 Bull St. in Savannah.

Oliver completes Marine training

The parents and grandparents of Richard Harvey Oliver Jr. announce he has graduated from boot camp at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Depot at Parris Island, S.C., and Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, N.C.
Oliver, a 2005 graduate of South Effingham High School, will continue his education in aviation traffic control electronics at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

McPherson promoted to chief master sergeant

Senior Master Sgt. Reginald McPherson has been promoted to chief master sergeant, the highest rank that can be attained by a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force.
Chief Master Sgt. McPherson received a personal notice of the promotion to the grade of chief master sergeant from Maj. Gen. William T. Nesbitt, commander, Georgia National Guard.
Chief Master Sgt. "Reggie" McPherson is the full-time logistics readiness squadron operations compliance superintendent for the 165th Airlift Wing, Georgia Air National Guard.

Hicklen to lead MLK Jr. Day parade

Don Hicklen will serve as the grand marshal of the 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade on Jan. 17. The parade, to be held in downtown Springfield, will begin at 10 a.m. The annual breakfast for the MLK Jr. Day Observance will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will be held in the Effingham County administrative complex.

Nelson completes basic training

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Zackary D. Nelson graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is the son of Larry Nelson of Guyton.
Nelson graduated in 2008 from South Effingham High School.

CAP Christmas dinner

The Effingham Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol met at Sweet Water Grill for its annual Christmas dinner.
Following the meal, Squadron Commander, Lt. Richard Bush announced that Cadet Capt. Twibell will be the Squadron's Cadet Commander effective Jan. 1, 2011. Twibell set out his plans for the year which include regular meetings, several day trips and implementation of the "Cadet of the Quarter" program.
Besides the cadets and members of their families, Deputy Commander Maj. Carl Godbee and Group 6 Commander, Maj. Gene Warnock were also in attendance.

Bringing a FORCE

Archie Jenkins, the coordinator for F.O.R.C.E., spoke to the Effingham Rotary Club.
F.O.R.C.E. is the acronym for Food Outreach Co-op of Effingham, a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization representing a collaboration of agencies, churches and food pantries in the county.
Services are coordinated throughout the county by sharing resources and distributing food items to those in need.
Local organizations, churches, civic groups and schools who wish to do food drives or have fundraisers are asked to consider F.O.R.C.E. to help stamp out hunger in Effingham.
