Cup of change can add up

Members of the Exchange Club put their money where their mouth is - loose change in a cup to contribute to the Empty Stocking Fund.
"All of us have loose change laying around the house, on the dresser, in the desk drawer, in a can in the closet, etc," said Reggie Loper, chairman of the fund drive. "This is money that can make a big difference for the Empty Stocking Fund and will really not be missed by those of us who habitually leave the coins laying around. Rebel leader speaks to Exchange

Coach Rick Tomberlin from Effingham County High School was the guest speaker at the Exchange Club of Effingham County.
Coach Tomberlin, who is in his first year at ECHS, led the Rebels to a 6-4 season.
His other career accomplishments include an overall record of 228-105, three state championships, nine region championships, five appearances in the Georgia Dome, winning four of them, and five state weightlifting championships.
However, his proudest accomplishment is his family, including his wife of 29 years and his 22-year-old daughter who will give him his first grandchild, a boy who hopefully will follow in his footsteps.

Cathcart speaks to Exchange

Bill Cathcart spoke to a group of 40 or more people at the Exchange Club of Effingham County for it One Nation Under God Program.
Cathcart is the vice president and general manager of WTOC-TV.
The One Nation Under God project was adopted on July 30, 1964, by Exchange leaders seeking to heighten awareness of the nation's religious heritage.

Salter completes basic training

Air Force Airman Matthew J. Salter graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Salter is the son of Ricky Salter of Rincon, and nephew of Wayne Salter of Savannah.
The airman is a 2001 graduate of Butler Christian School in Savannah.

Grand marshal honor ‘means a lot’ to Odum

When his service in World War II was over, Eddie Odum got off a bus in Savannah with his uniform and his duffel bag and only his girlfriend waiting on him.
Sixty-five years later, with that girlfriend now his wife of 65 years, Odum will be riding in a Model A Ford on Saturday as the grand marshal in the Guyton Christmas Parade.
"It means a lot, and it really means a lot to his children," said his wife Delma Odum . "He's quite happy this is going to happen."

Lamonte graduates from basic training

Steve Stephens of the Downtown Savannah Rotary Club and David Legasse of Rotary Savannah West spoke to the Effingham Rotary Club about Rotarians Play it Forward.

Exchange Club starts Empty Stocking campaign

The Exchange Club of Effingham County is beginning its annual Empty Stocking Fund drive.
"Now is the time for all good citizens to come together and help fill the empty stockings in Effingham County," said Reggie Loper, the chairman of the annual Effingham Empty Stocking Fund.
He said the current economic times are making it difficult for many families to put food on the table much less have the money to buy the family Christmas gifts."

At the art of the matter

With each painstaking application to the canvas, DAB is turning his view of a majestic treasure into a work of art.
The Charleston, S.C.-based artist - he goes by DAB - is creating a painting that isn't simply oil on canvas or a watercolor. DAB paints in a relief style, with the features of the building and the grounds of the historic Effingham Courthouse actually protruding from the surface.
And he's been working on this for a long time - he started back in 2007.

HES making plans for its Olde Fashioned Christmas celebration

The Historic Effingham Society is planning an old-fashioned Christmas for the first Saturday in December.
The event, Old-Fashioned Christmas, will be held on the grounds of the Living History Site in Springfield on Dec. 4 beginning at 6 p.m. It will include caroling, choir performances, ornament making, the lighting of the Christmas tree, s'mores making and a visit from Santa Claus.

City awards winners in Scarecrow contest

Three grand champions were crowned in the city of Rincon's 2010 Scarecrow Show-off.
The grand champion in community spirit went to 21 Auto Repair and the grand champion in residential went to Charlie Curtis of West 6th Street. The Effingham Herald's Scare D. Crow was crowned grand champion in the business category.
