The Exchange Club of Effingham presented their prestigious "Golden Deeds Award" to Gussie Nease at the Springfield United Methodist Church service on Sunday morning. This award is given to individuals who exhibit outstanding qualities and acts of service to others.
Jennifer Cobb, speech/language pathologist at Effingham Hospital, told the Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club about new treatments available at Effingham Hospital for dysphagia or difficulty swallowing. The medical disorder impacts mostly older patients with a cognitive impairment. The hospital offers services to help achieve optimal communication with speech impairments. Effingham Rotary Sunrise President Bonnie Dixon thanks Darrell O'Neal for his presentation on environmental health. O'Neal works with the Department of Public Health to ensure that local restaurants are complying with FDA food code regulations. He also does testing for public pools and well water.
The Gourd Retreat-Southern Style was held at Ebenezer Retreat Center on March 26-29. The retreat sponsored an auction to benefit the Low Country Down Syndrome Society at its Saturday night banquet. Gourd artists from all over the country came together at the retreat sponsored by Charlotte Durrence to take classes with other gourd friends. These artists donated many pieces of gourd art to be auctioned. They had artists from as far away as Arizona and Connecticut and many from North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and other states. The total raised for LCDSS was $2,500. Bethesda United Methodist Church recently made a donation of $1,200 to Manna House Ministries. First Baptist Church of Rincon also sent a special offering of $1,057 for the ministry. Rincon United Methodist, Faith Presbyterian, St. Luke's Episcopal, Bethel Lutheran, Mizpah United Methodist, and Faith Baptist Church contributed more than 500 pounds of food during the March.
Effingham Rotary Sunrise President Bonnie Dixon presents Daniel Westcot of the Georgia Forestry Commission with a commemorative pen. Westcot presented the club with the latest information on benefits of having green spaces, planted forests and ecological balance.
The residents at Effingham Care Center made Easter bonnets on April 8. The bonnets were made out of paper plates, multi-colored flowers and lace. The residents had a great time using their creativity to make these one of a kind bonnets.
Jacqueline Brown represented Effingham County in the 8th annual Leadership Southeast Georgia program. Brown was awarded her diploma at the graduation ceremony held March 14 at the Nessmith-Lane Building at Georgia Southern University.
