Effingham County real estate agents joined forces to collect and distribute Christmas presents and food to nine families through Family Promise and Effingham Victim Witness. Real estate professionals from all eight firms in Effingham took part in the drive.
Freddie Waltz was named the farmer of the year, and Steve Smith was named agribusinessman of the year at the annual Effingham County Young Farmers awards banquet. The event was held Dec. 7 at the New Ebenezer Retreat Center.
At its Dec. 3 meeting, the Effingham Exchange Club heard Melissa Traver, pastor of Rincon United Methodist Church, speak about Jesus' message of being the Good Samaritan. She spoke about Effingham Family Promise and how this organization, with support from the community, has helped several homeless families with children. It is an ecumenical program that has the support of approximately 14 local churches.
Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club President Dr Barbara Prosser presented $500 checks on behalf of its members to Kim Dennis, executive director of the Effingham Y, center, and Julie Dickey, co-director with the Effingham United Way, right. Both ladies spoke to the club members during their regular Tuesday meeting about the organization's programs and impact.
