Rincon Police Chief Mike Bohannon awarded Officer Mark Cartwright with a certificate and a pin at a recent Rincon City Council meeting. The award came from the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police in recognition of Cartwright's service in Afghanistan.

Vietnam vets invited to Sunday Gold Star event
An open invitation has been issued to all Vietnam veterans and their spouses to a reception for the families of Vietnam servicemen who were killed in action. The event will be Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at the American Legion in Springfield. The event is hosted by the American Legion Post 209 and the Board of the Veterans Park.

Kaitlin Zalys, 7, of Guyton won the Christmas coloring contest sponsored by Teach Right and the Effingham Herald. Zalys said she spent "a couple hours" coloring the Christmas tree and gingerbread house images for the contest.
Plant McIntosh powers Empty Stocking Fund

Post offices to be open Dec. 24, 31
With the U.S. Postal Service predicting its busiest holiday season ever, the post offices in Springfield and Rincon will be open regular business hours on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
