SEMS hosts open house, uniform fashion show
South Effingham Middle School hosted an open house for incoming students and their parents. On the agenda time was given to show the new school uniform options for next year. Current students demonstrated the multiple options that students can choose from and still be in compliance. A student panel was recruited to share with the incoming students. They were given a time for questions and answers.

STC to close Friday
SAVANNAH - Savannah Technical College will close all of its regional campuses, the office at the Fort Stewart Army Education Center, the Early Start Child Care Resource and Referral agency office in Brunswick and the Adult Literacy program offices for business all day, Friday as it holds its fifth annual Staff Development Day around the theme "Healthy, Wealthy and Wise."
GSU sets graduate studies information session
Anyone interested in pursuing a graduate degree at Georgia Southern University is invited to attend an information session on Tuesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. in Henderson Library, Room 1300 on the University campus in Statesboro.
Students name mascot
Shamia Wallace and LaTrell Fennell, both students at Marlow Elementary, submitted the winning name for Georgia's new litter prevention and abatement mascot, "The Brown Trasher." Of the 7,000 entries the state received, 24 students submitted the winning name, "Buster." All 24 were invited to the mascot naming ceremony on March 23 at the capitol.
USAA honors Rincon's Baldwin
The United States Achievement Academy announced that Chelsea Baldwin from Rincon has been named a United States National Award Winner in cheerleading.

Cagle to address Georgia Southern's 2007 graduates
Georgia's 11th Lt. Governor, Casey Cagle, will address 2,344 degree candidates at Georgia Southern University's spring 2007 commencement Saturday, May 5, beginning at 9 a.m. in Paulson Stadium. The candidates include 1,855 undergraduates and 489 graduate students.
Zipperer voted king of spring dance
Devin Zipperer of Rincon and Farren Crisp of Adams Run, S.C. were voted King and Queen at the USC Salkehatchie Student Spring Dance on April 13. Zipperer is a sophomore and is also a member of the USC Salkehatchie baseball team. Crisp is a sophomore.
SEMS student earns River of Words state recognition
Skye Mills, a sixth grade student at South Effingham Middle School, has been selected as a state winner in the River of Words Art and Poetry Project. As a member of the SEMS Gifted program, the prize-winning poetry was a result of a collaborative assignment between the scientific study of water and the literary genre of poetry.

Artwork that’s just ducky
Kids in Dr. Bill Gammon's art class participated in the duck stamp class and also gave Gammon his initial blue ribbon winner in Group 1. More than 22,000 students from across the U.S. took part, with 671 students in Georgia.
Getting their fingers on hands on learning
Effingham County Middle School held it's Math/Science Night on Tuesday. Hundreds of students and some parents came out to visit the many display and experiment booths that included local businesses and departments, such as Georgia Power, Gulfstream, Effingham County Sanitation, Effingham County Sheriff's Office and Georgia Southern University.

Savannah Tech to mark Preservation Week 2011
SAVANNAH – Against a backdrop of historic buildings, stately oaks and squares with historic monuments Savannah Technical College proudly celebrates Preservation Week 2011 with free classes for the public featuring expert guest speakers on preservation-related topics. Some sessions include hands-on activities for participants. This year's theme, Traditional Building Arts, focuses on teaching the "lost" building trades typically used on historic sites.
Christensen places second at Peach Council contest
AIKEN, S.C.-Micah Christensen, a senior at South Effingham High School, took second place at the Peach Council competition in the Leadership High School Speech Contest hosted by the Savannah River Site Leadership Association. Christensen was sponsored by the Gulfstream Management Association in Savannah. His effort earned him a $250 award, as he attempted to advance toward the $4,000 grand prize in a national contest sponsored by the National Management Association, the world's largest leadership development ...
Rincon PTA honors birthday students
Each month, Rincon Elementary PTA volunteers host a birthday party for those students who have a birthday for that month. During one day of the month, all of the "birthday children" gather in the cafeteria.
A work of art at GES art show
Close to 400 students participated in the Guyton Elementary School art show. Their artwork was framed and displayed in the lunchroom that was transformed into an art gallery.
Prosser named CEO of Career Academy
The Effingham County Board of Education has named Barbara Prosser, currently the corporate compliance officer at Effingham Hospital and Care Center, as the permanent CEO and principal of the Effingham Career Academy.

CLA class of 2011 completes program
The Effingham YMCA recently awarded 13 Effingham County High School sophomores and juniors with awards of excellence for completing the 2010-11 year of the Christian Leadership Academy. The Christian Leadership Academy is a seven-month program, beginning in September of each year, designed to take 12 rising high school sophomores and juniors from Effingham County public and private schools and train them in the skills of leadership from a Christian perspective.
Sand Hill parents learn CPR
CPR training for parents at Sand Hill Elementary was held April 6-7. The class was taught by Marsha Cornell, coordinator of School Health Services. The parents enjoyed this very informative class on First Aid and CPR. All participants received a "Heartsaver First Aid" card issued by the American Heart Association.
Quick thinkers at the Quick-Think-a-Thon
