Jackson Tribute Week is off the wall at SEHS

The South Effingham High School Media Center held its second annual "Michael Jackson Tribute and Trivia Week" during the first week of September.
The week-long event featured staff dressed in Michael Jackson costumes, the playing of hit songs by the artist, "white glove" decorating, a daily trivia question about the singer's life for students to answer, celebrity biography books and magazines for check-out, and a drawing for prizes at the week's end. High school students and Pre-K students participated.

SEMS’ Gordon places second in area FFA floral design competition

The South Effingham Middle School seventh grader Tiana Gordon placed second in the Area 4 FFA floral design competition.
For the competition, which was held Sept. 14 in Swainsboro, students were given one hour to complete a three flower bud vase and a boutonniere using fresh flowers. Gordon impressed the judges with her creativity and attention to detail.
She will travel to the state floral design competition at the FFA camp in Covington in March.

Schools putting stimulus money to work

The Effingham County School System has long realized the need for employability training for students with disabilities and jumped at the chance to use stimulus funding to expand the transition program by hiring two full-time transition facilitators to serve both high schools and all three middle schools.
The transition facilitators have worked tirelessly to start up a community-based vocational instruction program that is now in its second year. The program provides the opportunity for individuals with disabilities to get on-the-job training at local businesses.

ECHS wins grand champion

The Effingham County Competition Cheerleaders won first place in Class AAAA and Grand Champion out of 21 teams at the Gamecock Challenge at Eagle Creek on Oct. 2.
Earlier competitions this year include first place at Raider Rumble in West Laurens, second place at Cotton Cheer Classic in Jeff Davis, and second place at the Coastal Cheer Classic in Richmond Hill.
The ECHS junior varsity also won first place in their division at the Gamecock Challenge.

SEHS takes Cheer Classic

South Effingham High School Mustang cheerleaders won first place in the Class AAAA division of the Coastal Cheer Classic held at Richmond Hill High School on Sept. 25.
Effingham County High School placed second and Richmond Hill High School came in third.
Also, Mustang cheerleader Megan Brown, won the jump-off portion of the competition.

ECS’ Johnny Appleseed Day

Effingham Christian School celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day on Sept. 24 by planting trees around the campus playground. Students and teachers commemorated the day by dressing in overalls, flannel shirts, and straw hats. Johnny Appleseed was a folk hero born in 1774, just before the start of the American Revolution. He was deliberate in planting orchards to give farmers a livelihood and to provide food for their communities. Students learned about the importance of working together to accomplish a common goal to improve our environment through agriculture.

STC Foundation awards scholarships for 2010-11

SAVANNAH-Twenty-one Savannah Technical College students were awarded privately funded scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year, which began Wednesday. The scholarships represent gifts made by individuals and organizations to the Savannah Technical College Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization that raises money to support students, workforce development projects and training activities at Savannah Technical College.
"Our scholarship committee worked diligently to review the more than 85 applications they received this year," said Melinda Laager, executive director of the STC Foundation. The scholarship committee includes faculty and staff members along with Foundation Board and Community Council members.

Land purchase to help growing GSU expand

A planned expansion of recreation offerings for a growing student enrollment is under way at Georgia Southern University following the purchase of 167 acres by the Georgia Southern University Housing Foundation, a non-profit corporation established to acquire and develop real estate.
The land, located adjacent to the Meadow Lakes subdivision in Statesboro, will allow the University to provide additional activities such as a walking/cross country course, golf and one of the areas' only disc golf courses.
Plans also include using the facility for a variety of academic purposes including teaching classes at the complex.

SEMS Y-Clubbers hit the road for district event

Twenty-one students from South Effingham Middle School Y-Club attended the Southeast District Rally on Sept. 11. The students met with other "Y" Club members from surrounding areas.
The rally, held at Telfair County High School in McRae, was sponsored by the State YMCA of Georgia. Students from schools all over the District took part in the event.
Students participated in workshops on leadership, brainstorming, and enthusiasm. They also took part in fun filled assemblies giving them the enthusiasm to start their Club year off right.

SEMS Y Club holds first aid drive

The South Effingham Middle School Y-Club hosted a school-wide First Aid Drive to collect items to restock the school clinic. A wide variety of items were collected, including bandages, cough drops, first aid creams, antibacterial soaps and wipes. Y-Club offered an ice cream treat to the homeroom bringing the most items which went to Mrs. Connie Carter's homeroom for bringing in 38 items.

"Reveal" was the 2010 See You at the Pole theme held Wednesday. This was the 20th anniversary of the worldwide student-led celebration. More than 70 students attended the event at South Effingham Middle School. See You at the Pole brings students to their school flagpoles to pray for their leaders, schools and families, asking to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their campuses and countries.
