Effingham County schools pre-k applications available Feb. 1

Pre-Kindergarten applications for the 2008-2009 school year will be available on Feb. 1. You may pick up an application from any of the schools, the Effingham County Board of Education Office (and on the Board's Web site: www.effinghamschools.com), Effingham County Health Department or from the Department of Family and Children Services in Springfield. Your child must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2008, to be eligible for the Pre-K program as required by the Bright from the Start: Department of Early Care and Learning.

Clifton graduates from AASU

Paula Renee Clifton graduated from Armstrong Atlantic State University with a Bachelor of Science majoring in early childhood with a concentration in media technology. Paula graduated with honors Magna Cum Laude and Kappa Delta Pi. The commencement ceremony was held Dec. 8 at the Alumni Arena in Savannah. Clifton and her family reside in Springfield.

ECMS adds biographies to media center with help of grant

Effingham County Middle School has "beefed up the biographies" in its media center thanks to a recent Kroger/Colgate grant for $2,500. According to media specialist Kacy Tedder who wrote the grant application, only one school per state receives the grant each year, so it is quite an honor for ECMS to be chosen. To qualify for the grant, schools must be recognized as a "school in need."

SEMS gives academic awards

South Effingham Middle School eighth grade Roadrunners team held its second nine-week team awards on Dec. 19, honoring those students with perfect attendance, the highest average in each academic subject, highest AR points this nine-weeks, and those who met their AR goals. The team also gave out two most improved awards, citizenship award and principal's award.

SEMS celebrates homecoming

South Effingham Middle School celebrated its 2007-2008 homecoming on Dec. 12 during their last home basketball game. Students were invited to stay after school for the basketball games against Screven County Middle School and a homecoming dance after the games. Both the girls and boys teams defeated Screven County. The girls won 30-25 and and the boys won 39-38.
