Walking the plank

After months of rehearsals students at Ebenezer Middle School performed "Captain Bree and her Lady Pirates" Thursday night. Director Lori Benassi-Parker chose the musical after reading several plays. She said this play was the one that stood out.

Students give change for pets in need

Each Friday in February, students from Blandford Elementary brought in their spare change for a campaign called "Pennies for Puppies, Dimes for Dogs and Coins for Cats."

Students compete in state science & engineering fair

Students from SEHS and SEMS competed at the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair in Athens, March 28-31. SEHS students were Kirsten Edwards and Melanie Richtman (both received fourth place). SEMS students were Selina Jonas, Megan Spence, Joshua Anderson and Jessica Bitting. Selina and Megan received third place recognition and Joshua and Jessica got honorable mention.

Local students make dean's list

The following area residents recently were named to the dean's or president's list at Mercer University for the fall 2006 semester. Inclusion on the dean's and president's lists requires students to meet rigorous grade point average standards specific to their school within the University.

SEMS Science Olympiad places ninth in state competition

SEHS National Honors Society gets in the holiday spirit

The South Effingham High School pre-K celebrated a Holiday Craft Day with Santa on Dec. 16. The two-hour event featured Santa's visit with the pre-K students, holiday craft-making at activity tables, gift-giving and a Christmas party of tasty snacks and good cheer.

Twenty-one students to vie for spots in GHP

The Governor's Honors Program, known as GHP, is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. A function of the Georgia Department of Education, it takes place on the campus of Valdosta State University. The 2012 program will be the 49th summer, making it the longest continually running program of its kind in the nation.

SEHS FBLA pitiches in for the holidays

During November and December, South Effingham High School Future Business Leaders of America helped provide Thanksgiving dinner to a needy family and fill Christmas wish lists for 17 children, all in the county. FBLA partnered with Future Educators of America and Family Career Community Leaders of America and respective classes to bring in numerous donations to help fill wishes for less privileged children in the county.

Retired Educators honor Grandparent Day essay winners

The Effingham County Retired Educators Association recently held their annual Grandparents Day essay contest. The contest was open to all fifth graders in the Effingham County School system. The essays were judged by local retired educators. There were three winners from each of the eight Effingham County elementary schools. FBLA students make a sweet move

South Effingham High School's Future Business Leaders of America members brought in a variety of candy to create trick-or-treat goody bags for the Backus Children's Hospital. Members who attended the meeting helped stuff and tie off approximately 30 treat bags.

Marching Mustangs cap great year

The 2011 Marching Band season is history and the South Effingham Marching Mustangs had another banner year. The marching band begins its season each July with band camp, where band members learn basic marching techniques and the mechanics of their competition show.
