Schools pitch in for Haiti relief efforts
Effingham County schools have raised $25,801 for Haiti relief efforts. The donations were totaled at a principal's meeting at the Board of Education headquarters last Friday. The almost $26,000 collected far exceeded the original goal of one dollar per student and teacher, which would have been less than half of the total. "This town never ceases to surprise me," said school system communication specialist Pam Cox. "Even when the economy is down, giving is high." ...

The United Daughters of the Confederacy is the oldest patriotic organization in the county and the Springfield chapter will soon celebrate its chapter being 50 years old, having been organized in 1960. They held a quilt raffle and the proceeds will help fund the many projects of the local chapter.
School system to start taking pre-kindergarten applications
Pre-kindergarten applications for the 2010-11 school year will be available on Feb. 1. You may pick up an application from any of the schools, the Effingham County Board of Education Office (and on the Board's Web site: effinghamschools.com), the Effingham County Health Department or from the Department of Family and Children Services in Springfield.
A visit to Power Town Village
Employees of Georgia Power Steven Snooks, Mike Gresham and David Elliott brought the Power Town Village, a miniature scale town that has real electric lines that they energize, to the ECHS pre-kindergarten class to do a safety presentation that teaches students to stay away from power lines. The presentation showed students what could happen if they come in contact with a power line.
CLC honored by General Assembly
The 12 members of the Effingham YMCA's Christian Leadership Academy took part in Effingham Day at the Capitol and a had a resolution in their honor read on the floor of the state House of Representatives.

Ready to be crowned
The Miss Diamond Pageant will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at Effingham County Middle School. Debra Shelton is crowning the winner and instead of a Miss Congeniality award, a Logan Shelton Award will be handed out.
4-H’ers attend Junior Conference
Effingham County 4-H youth recently traveled to Rock Eagle 4-H Center to attend the Georgia 4-H Junior Conference, a 26-hour event filled with community service projects, classes, workshops and activities. There were 715 4-H youth who took part in this year's conference. Participants from Effingham County were Jose Espino, Phoenix Truitt, Skyler Lanier and Anna Sykes.
Springfield Elementary marks Veterans Day
In honor of Veterans Day, Springfield Elementary School celebrated their local veterans with a special program Wednesday afternoon, featuring guest speaker, Lt. Col. John Gentry, who spoke to the students about Army Values. The National Guard visitors brought a Humvee and a howitzer to show the children after the assembly. Students also wrote more than 600 letters to service members deployed in Afghanistan.
USG looks to more students ready for college
Getting more students ready for college and able to complete college has led University System of Georgia officials to look closely at all areas involved in this effort, including the efforts directed at the Board of Regents level.
RES parent of the month
November is National Parent Engagement Month and Rincon Elementary School encourages and welcomes parental involvement. In an effort to recognize valuable parents of students at RES, the school is continuing to salute parents for their hard work and commitment. Natarsha House has been selected for the "Parent of Month" award for November at Rincon Elementary School.
EES honored for fire safety
State Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens presented awards that recognized Georgia fire personnel and citizens for outstanding service in fighting fires and saving lives at the 19th Annual "Life, Fire & Safety" Awards Luncheon, as part of the Fire Prevention Week activities.
