Effingham County High School Future Farmers of America member Jesse Edwards recently placed first in the Area IV FFA Agricultural Tractor and Machinery Safety, Operations and Maintenance Career Development Event. The event was held at Metter High School on Sept. 8.
Effingham County High School pre-kindergarten students learned about snakes from Gary and Jessica Hodges. The Hodges brought their pet snakes to their son David's pre-k classroom to teach the students about snakes.
ECHS Chorale Director Wes Perkins led the RebelAires Chorale as they sang the national anthem to begin the school day on Friday in remembrance of the national tragedy of 9/11. Perkins chose the upper classmen for this tribute out of his 30-member group. The entire student body was led in the pledge to the flag, followed by a moment of silent reflection.
SAVANNAH - Savannah State University has received a $2 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program for the Minority Access for Graduate Education and Careers (MAGEC) in STEM Program Plus: Strengthening/Sustaining the Culture of Excellence for STEM education.
The Effingham YMCA Christian Leadership Academy participants had a rare opportunity to travel to Statesboro and hear former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice speak at Georgia Southern University. Their volunteer advisor, Dr. Darren Thomas, submitted a question online prior to the event and his question was selected and answered by Rice during her speech. Greg Arnsdorff, Effingham County Schools assistant superintendent for instruction and technology, has been selected to serve on the Georgia School Superintendent's Association (GSSA) Board of Directors beginning in October. Arnsdorff will fill the cabinet-level member position and will attend five GSSA meetings per year.
SAVANNAH - Savannah Technical College will celebrate International Literacy Day today with a brief ceremony at 10 a.m. followed by a literacy information fair until noon in the college's Eckburg Auditorium on the Savannah Campus on White Bluff Road.
ATLANTA - The Georgia Institute of Technology officially installed its 11th president, G.P. "Bud" Peterson, at an investiture (inauguration) ceremony Sept. 3. The Institute is using the historic occasion to kick off its efforts to create a strategic vision for the next 25 years.
