Four earn degrees from University of Georgia
The following students from Effingham County received degrees from the University of Georgia at the end of the fall 2010 semester. Commencement exercises were held Dec. 17, 2010, at the University of Georgia.

Graham among ATC graduates

Career Academy looks to catch Ford PAS
ATLANTA-Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle has announced that the Effingham Career Academy will be receiving a $10,000 grant to support its efforts to become a Ford PAS Next Generation Learning Community. The announcement was made during Effingham Day at the State Capitol, sponsored by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.
ECHS to host ‘Apply to College Week’
Effingham County High School counselors and media specialists will be hosting their first "Apply to College Week," Jan. 31-Feb. 4. The goal for this event is to provide all Effingham County High School seniors the opportunity to submit at least one application for college admission and someone to assist them as needed to complete the process.
School system set to take pre-k applications
Pre-kindergarten applications for the 2011-12 school year will be available on Feb. 1. You may pick up an application from any of the schools, the Effingham County Board of Education Office (and on the Board's Web site www.effinghamschools.com), the Effingham County Health Department or from the Department of Family and Children Services in Springfield.
ECHS teacher of the month
The student nominated ECHS Teacher of the Month for December is Wes Perkins. His students praised Perkins for being an exceptional individual, reliable, able to relate to them and a wonderful music teacher.
100 days of school
The pre-k class at Little Tots celebrated its 100th day of school on Jan. 21. The children were asked to bring in 100 items from home to share with the class and they took part in activities that placed emphasis on 100.
Winners all
Special needs student from across the county competed in the annual Special Olympics Friday at Effingham County High School.
School system looks at middle school shift
The Effingham County Board of Education is currently reviewing a recommendation to redistrict the middle school population at Ebenezer Middle School.

STC to start electrical utility technology program
SAVANNAH-This fall Savannah Technical College will begin enrolling students in a specialized program that prepares skilled technicians to work in the fast-paced world of power generation and transmission. The Electrical Utility Technology (EUT) programs will include an associate degree, diploma and certificate option and will incorporate a range of new technologies.

‘Eagle Nation’ ready to go on parade

The eagles will add more artistic vitality to the community, while funding Georgia Southern scholarships and research.
School board members complete GSBA training
Members of the Effingham County School Board were recently recognized for successfully completing board member training activities sponsored by the Georgia School Boards Association. Certificates of recognition will be presented at the Aug. 18 school board meeting to the following board members: F. Lamar Allen, Troy K. Alford, Eddie Tomberlin, Vickie Decker and Mose Mock.
Arrington honored by NAAE
LEXINGTON, Ky. –Meredith Arrington, agricultural educator at Effingham County High School, has been selected for a Teachers Turn the Key Award from the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE).
Early Learning standards study released
ATLANTA-Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, a leader in the field of early childhood education, has released the results of a new study: Georgia's Early Learning Standards Alignment Study. Grainger donates to STC Foundation
Grainger, Inc., presented a $10,000 check to the Savannah Technical College Foundation. The funding will be used to support scholarships for industrial technology students.
Effingham County 4-H’ers attend State Congress
Effingham County 4-H'ers attended State Congress in Atlanta from July 19-22 and returned home with high honors. The 4-H State Congress brings students from all over Georgia together to compete in project achievement areas at the state level.

Final numbers aren't quite tallied, but the Effingham County Board of Education should close the 2011 financial year considerably stronger than FY 2010.
Forbes names GSU one of ‘America’s Best Colleges’
Georgia Southern University has been named one of America's Best Colleges by Forbes magazine, whose ranking includes the top 20 percent of colleges and universities based on the "student's point of view." The honor is the latest for the growing university that expects to welcome a record 20,000 students to its campus when fall semester classes begin Aug. 22.

Schools bracing to make stricter AYP goals
Although Effingham County schools' 2011 test scores earned overall gains and high rankings compared to the state, Adequate Yearly Progress projections show no schools in the system meeting AYP by 2013.
Pitching in to start the school year
Effingham schools started the 2011-12 year Thursday, and in celebration Effingham Women in Business donated 24 book bags to school social workers to distribute to the system's homeless students. Teach Right sold WIB the book bags at wholesale price.
Supporting Treutlen House
The Edward Jones offices in Port Wentworth and Rincon partnered together to collect school supplies for the Treutlen House located in Effingham County.
