The following students from Effingham County received degrees from the University of Georgia at the end of the fall 2010 semester. Commencement exercises were held Dec. 17, 2010, at the University of Georgia.

Graham among ATC graduates

Under a spell

Career Academy looks to catch Ford PAS
ATLANTA-Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle has announced that the Effingham Career Academy will be receiving a $10,000 grant to support its efforts to become a Ford PAS Next Generation Learning Community. The announcement was made during Effingham Day at the State Capitol, sponsored by the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce.
ECHS to host ‘Apply to College Week’
Effingham County High School counselors and media specialists will be hosting their first "Apply to College Week," Jan. 31-Feb. 4. The goal for this event is to provide all Effingham County High School seniors the opportunity to submit at least one application for college admission and someone to assist them as needed to complete the process.
School system set to take pre-k applications
Pre-kindergarten applications for the 2011-12 school year will be available on Feb. 1. You may pick up an application from any of the schools, the Effingham County Board of Education Office (and on the Board's Web site www.effinghamschools.com), the Effingham County Health Department or from the Department of Family and Children Services in Springfield.
ECHS teacher of the month
The student nominated ECHS Teacher of the Month for December is Wes Perkins. His students praised Perkins for being an exceptional individual, reliable, able to relate to them and a wonderful music teacher.
100 days of school
The pre-k class at Little Tots celebrated its 100th day of school on Jan. 21. The children were asked to bring in 100 items from home to share with the class and they took part in activities that placed emphasis on 100.
Winners all
Special needs student from across the county competed in the annual Special Olympics Friday at Effingham County High School.
School system looks at middle school shift
The Effingham County Board of Education is currently reviewing a recommendation to redistrict the middle school population at Ebenezer Middle School.

See You At The Pole
"Converge" was the 2011 See You at the Pole theme held Sept. 28. More than 70 students attended the event at South Effingham Middle School. Supported by students, friends, family, and staff members the SEMS SYATP Leadership Team hosted the event. The leadership committee provided free doughnuts and gave out See You at the Pole Bracelets provided by the SEMS Y-Club to all attendees.
State asks for waiver from some NCLB provisions
U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge personally delivered Georgia's request for a waiver to certain provisions of No Child Left Behind (NCLB), and an alternative, to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

SAVANNAH -Next time you are on the Savannah Technical College Liberty Campus, you just might see some unusual art on display, as an assortment of bras will be hanging in the administration building through mid-October as the campus supports breast cancer awareness.
ECHS YAC pitches in for FORCE
From Sept. 12-16 the ECHS Youth Advisory Council, along with the Interact Club and Family Connection Communities and Schools, sponsored an After Labor Day Food Drive benefitting the Food Outreach Co-op of Effingham (FORCE). They collected 1,500 nonperishable goods to help FORCE restock local food pantries.

It's not common for a busy elected official to sit in a pint-sized chair alongside a group of 4-year-olds. Nor does it happen every day that scores of legislators around Georgia are doing the same thing in pre-k classrooms in their districts.
A wild time for writing test at ECHS

STC to hold visiting artisan series
SAVANNAH-Savannah Technical College proudly announces the Historic Preservation Visiting Artisan Series featuring H. Thomas Kupper of the world-renowned Lincoln Cathedral in Lincolnshire, England. Kupper an internationally-acclaimed stained glass artisan, will be visiting the first week of October.
Panther Fest set for Oct. 29
Effingham County Middle School will be hosting its annual fall festival event, the 2011 Panther Fest Gift and Craft Bazaar, on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the school, located at 1659 Highway 119 South in Springfield.
Hart earns dean’s list honor at Darton College
ALBANY - Jennifer A. Hart of Rincon made the Dean's List at Darton College for the Summer 2011 semester. To qualify for the Dean's List, a student must be full time and have earned a 3.4 or higher grade point average.

Career Academy hits the Gold standard with LEED
Mark Fitzpatrick of the Savannah branch of the U.S. Green Building Council presented a plaque to Effingham County Board of Education Chairman Lamar Allen on Wednesday, certifying the Effingham Career Academy as a LEED Gold facility.
Coloring contest can lead to college savings
ATLANTA-Coloring is perhaps one of the first activities a child embarks upon on his or her educational journey, creating a foundation for creativity and a lifetime of learning. This September, coloring can also help create a financial foundation for one Georgia child. In recognition of College Savings Month, the Path2College 529 Plan is holding a coloring sweepstakes where one child will be awarded $1,529 for his or her college savings plan.
