SEHS art students accept SCAD Showcase Challenge
Elizabeth Heyden and Marlie Smith, both juniors at South Effingham High School, recently participated in the Savannah College of Art and Design's "SCAD Challenge," an international 2-D and 3-D art competition for high school juniors and seniors.
Career Academy team members introduced to container logistics
Team members from the Effingham Career Academy's Architecture and Design lab and students from business classes at both high schools recently participated in a new project organized by local logistic industry leaders. Called "Follow the Container," the program gives students a sneak peak into not only what's shipped in a container, but also how the containers come off the ship, through the port, over the road, and into and out of the warehouse.
State school board to do away with graduation test
The State Board of Education approved State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge's plan to phase out the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). Students who enter high school in fall 2011 will no longer take the GHSGT in English, math, social studies and science, in order to graduate. Georgia Southern University will welcome two of its alumni back to campus as Chick-fil-A President and Chief Operating Officer Dan T. Cathy and Georgia Chamber of Commerce President Chris Clark have been selected to serve as spring 2011 commencement speakers. The annual ceremonies are scheduled for May 13 (graduate) and May 14 (undergraduate).

ATLANTA-Georgia's adult learners who want to earn their General Educational Development (GED®) diploma will soon have to pay more for the test following changes to the fee structure by the national administrator of the GED Testing Service.

In an effort to serve the needs of the community, Teach Right, a locally owned and operated educational supply store, has announced plans for summer workshops for teachers and parents, and play-days for children. Owner Marian Hodge announced that there would be no charge for the events; however, materials from the workshop presentations would be available for purchase.

Back-to-school immunization clinics coming to Effingham
School books have been put away for now and children in Effingham County are enjoying the lazy days of summer. But the new school year is fast approaching and in preparation, Effingham County Health Department officials will extend clinic hours to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 26 so children can get the necessary back-to-school screenings and immunizations.

Claxton awarded Plum Creek scholarship
Plum Creek has awarded a $2,000 scholarship to an Effingham County high school graduate. Plum Creek annually awards scholarships to exemplary high school seniors who plan to continue their education after graduation. The scholarships recognize students who demonstrate academic excellence, involvement in school and community activities, and overall achievement throughout their high school careers. William Claxton is the recipient for Effingham County.

University System boasts $12.6B impact
Even during tough economic conditions Georgia's public university system remains a powerful economic engine for the state as chronicled in a newly released report. The Selig Center for Economic Growth in the University of Georgia's Terry College of Business found that the University System of Georgia had a $12.6 billion economic impact on the state's economy during Fiscal Year 2010.
