Shutdown Challenge cuts $2M
The Effingham County Board of Education has tallied up $2 million in savings with its energy program that was implemented in January 2008.
SSU granted degree programs
SAVANNAH - The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has approved three, new degree programs at Savannah State University - a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science with a concentration in Chemistry or Biology; a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a concentration in Secondary Education; and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education.
Christensen wins leadership speech contest
Micah Christensen, a senior at South Effingham High School, recently won the local "Leadership" High School Speech Contest sponsored by the Gulfstream Management Association (GMA).

Chancellor: University System will meet challenges
Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. in his final "State of the System" address noted that the people in the University System of Georgia and the students enrolled at the 35 colleges and universities are the constant that provide it strength and stability during a trying economic period in the System's 79-year history.
Students show off skills at Skills USA
On Jan. 27, Skills USA members from South Effingham High School and Effingham County High School competed at the regional competition. Five of the six members from ECHS placed first in their categories and five of the 10 members from SEHS placed first.

Darton College bestows honors on local students
ALBANY-Cindy L Price and Dana L Shores of Rincon made the Merit List at Darton College in Albany for the Fall 2010 semester. To qualify for the Merit List, a student must be part time and have earned a 3.4 or higher grade point average.
Numbers brighten for BoE
December proved a successful month for the Effingham County Board of Education budget, gaining more than $8 million in property tax collections, effectively eliminating a November general back account deficit of $3 million.
Middle School redistricting recommendation
The Effingham County Board of Education is currently reviewing a recommendation to change the middle school district lines in order to shift approximately 168 students from Ebenezer Middle School (EMS) to Effingham County Middle School (ECMS) and approximately 36 students from Ebenezer Middle School (EMS) to South Effingham Middle School (SEMS). ECHS FBLA ‘dives in’ to school year
Five officers of the Future Business Leaders of America chapter at Effingham County High School "dive in" for a new year by attending the summer leadership and officer training summit at Swainsboro High School on July 18. YMCA accepting applications for Christian Leadership Academy
The Christian Leadership Academy, a seven-month program beginning in September, is designed to take 12 rising high school sophomores and juniors from Effingham County public and private schools and train them in the skills of leadership done from a Christian perspective.

Sixty students from the district attended the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference (RYLA) at SGC. RYLA is a Rotary International program that started in Southeast Asia and has spread across the world.

Teach Right offering summer workshops
In an effort to serve the needs of the community, Teach Right, a locally owned and operated educational supply store, has announced plans for summer workshops for teachers and parents, and play-days for children. Owner Marian Hodge announced that there would be no charge for the events; however, materials from the workshop presentations would be available for purchase.
Rahn chosen as FFA Central Region Star
Shane A. Rahn, a 2011 honor graduate of Effingham County High School and vice-president of the Effingham FFA program, has been chosen as the Central Region Star in Agricultural Placement for Georgia.

Back-to-school immunization clinics coming to Effingham
School books have been put away for now and children in Effingham County are enjoying the lazy days of summer. But the new school year is fast approaching and in preparation, Effingham County Health Department officials will extend clinic hours to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 26 so children can get the necessary back-to-school screenings and immunizations.
Effingham Co. students complete Youth ChalleNGe
CLAY NATIONAL GUARD CENTER, MARIETTA-Seven Effingham County teens graduated June 18 from the National Guard Youth Challenge program. Commencement ceremonies were held for Class 2011-36 from the campus operated by the Georgia Army Guard at the Guard Garrison Training Center in Hinesville.
Big steps for First Steps preschoolers
First Steps Preschool recently had a four-day camp for 3- and 4-year-old children. The week was filled with special visitors, crafts, games and music that corresponded to the theme of the day.
