South Effingham Elementary jump starts art program
The cafeteria at South Effingham Elementary School was transformed into an art gallery Tuesday night as parents, students and staff came out to see and buy student artwork.
Students honored for Herdsman Award

Forget Paris and New York, fashion has hit Effingham. Saturday, eight student designers and their models did their little turns on the catwalk at South Effingham High's 4th annual Fashion Show, themed "Dusk to Dawn." Either alone or in teams, these designers worked outside of school since September to create clothing in three categories: "Plant Life," "Different….But the Same" and "Go Green!" Effingham County 4-H’ers attend State Congress
Effingham County 4-H'ers attended State Congress in Atlanta from July 19-22 and returned home with high honors. The 4-H State Congress brings students from all over Georgia together to compete in project achievement areas at the state level.

The General Assembly requires that all public school systems in Georgia have school councils in place for the purposes of bringing communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to solve difficult education problems, improve academic achievement, provide support for teachers and administrators, and bring parents into the school-based decision-making process. Tanner takes part in AASU advanced research
Mark Tanner from Rincon participated in a six-week Science and Technology Expansion Program (STEP) this summer at Armstrong Atlantic State University. As an entering freshman to Armstrong, Tanner conducted research on nanoparticle catalysis of environmental pollutants. He lived on campus free of charge and received a weekly stipend of $300.
State to start Complete College Georgia Initiative
Gov. Nathan Deal has announced that Georgia is one of 10 states to be awarded $1 million by Complete College America to fuel policy innovations and reforms aimed at significantly increasing college completion. In conjunction with this grant, Deal also introduced his Complete College Georgia Initiative.

Hupman earns national scholarship
Georgia Southern University student Jeffrey Hupman was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), a nonprofit corporation. The Tampa, Fla., native has achieved a 3.93 GPA, and is the first student from the University to be awarded the competitive national scholarship.
Comcast honors Lariscy, Usher
The Comcast Foundation, founded in 1999 to provide charitable support to its local communities and to empower and enrich lives, today announced the 2011 recipients of its annual Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program. Among the winners are Michaela Lariscy, a student from South Effingham High School and Hillary Usher, a student from Effingham County High School.
ECHS FBLA ‘dives in’ to school year
Five officers of the Future Business Leaders of America chapter at Effingham County High School "dive in" for a new year by attending the summer leadership and officer training summit at Swainsboro High School on July 18. Hannah Boyd, president; Michaela Williford, vice president; Vanessa Williams, secretary; Kelsey Fulford, treasurer; and Josie Alford, historian attended the summit to prepare themselves for their roles as officers this year.
